What is Long COVID?

For the majority of people, they completely recovery from COVID-19 after a few weeks. Unfortunately, some people continue to experience a variety of symptoms after their initial recovery from the infection, and albeit the symptoms are not serious enough to require hospital care, they are persistent, can be debilitating and life limiting.  With the main cause of concern being, how long will it last.

As with any kind of long-term illness, it can be frustrating and unbearable for those who are affected, and the latest data analysis from thousands of users of the COVID Symptom Study app from ZOE, published as a preprint, shows that one in 20 people are likely to suffer from COVID-19 symptoms lasting more than 8 weeks. 

Researcher has shown that older people are much more likely to suffer from long COVID than younger people, although it does occur across all ages. 

So, what are the most common signs and symptoms of Long Covid;

  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Chest pains
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Joint pain
  • Memory loss and or poor concentration
  • Mood changes: e.g. anxiety, depression
